February 23, 2026

The Asian American Initiative held a webinar on February 23rd that brought together researchers and scholars for the panel discussion “Asian American in Focus: Data, Narrative, and Action.” The event opened with a welcome by AAI Acting Director, Prof. Qin Gao, who thanked participants for joining a discussion on "what we know about Asian Americans based on rigorous social science research, what misconceptions need to be debunked, and what actions need to be taken."

The panel featured Sruthi Chandrasekaran, from The Asian American Foundation, Alex Chew, from NORC at the University of Chicago, Stacie Tao, from University of Chicago, and Xi Song and Christopher Wimer, both representing Columbia University.. The panel explored what rigorous social science research and national and local data tell us about Asian American mobility, prosperity, and well-being. Based on their own data collection and analyses, the panelists went on to debunk common misconceptions about Asian Americans, while laying out practical directions for future inquiry, and implications for policy and action.  The conversation was moderated by Prof. Van Tran, of CUNY Graduate Center.
