Author Michael Luo speaks about the Chinese American experience chronicled in "Strangers in the Land”

April 13, 2026

This spring term, The Asian American Initiative invited The New Yorker’s Michael Luo to speak to our students and guests about his award-winning book “Strangers in the Land: Exclusion, Belonging, and the Epic Story of the Chinese in America.”   He read a passage from the book, talked about his experience working with archives, and told an enraptured audience about his writing process and the racist incident he was a victim of and that prompted him to write the book.  Moderating this discussion was Columbia Journalism School Professor, and author of Seeing Ghosts, Kat Chao.

Watch a recording of this conversation here.
